How to Read an Outside Hitter's Full Stat Line
Outside hitter is usually the highest-volume attacking position on the floor — and it's easy to read an OH's stat line as just "how many kills, how efficient." But the position's real workload is broader than that, and the full picture only shows up when you look at all four categories together, not just attack.
We already know Emily Miller is this team's outside hitter — confirmed directly from her player profile, not inferred. She's also the player we've referenced most across this series, usually through the lens of attack volume. This time, we're looking at her entire stat line, category by category, to see what an OH's real workload actually looks like.

The attacking load
Emily M. took 18 attack attempts — the highest volume on the team, representing 29% of the team's total attacks. Her hitting percentage was +.167 with a 33% kill rate. We've covered this before: a lower-volume hitter on the team (Alina F., 14 attempts) converted at nearly three times the efficiency. That comparison still holds, but seen through the OH lens specifically, it reads differently — a 29% share of the offense is a real load to carry, and volume at this level naturally comes with more variance than a role getting a handful of set touches.
The passing side most people don't check
This is the part of an OH's stat line that's easy to skip past. Emily M. passed only 4 times all match, at a 1.50 pass rating and 50% positive rate — the lowest volume and lowest rating of any passer on the team.
That's not necessarily a weakness worth "fixing." A common, deliberate coaching tradeoff is protecting your highest-usage attacker from serve-receive load — fewer passing reps means more focus reserved for attacking, at the cost of the team needing other passers to carry more of that responsibility. Whether that tradeoff is happening on purpose here is worth a direct conversation with the coaching staff, but the stat line itself is consistent with that kind of role design, not with an unnoticed weak spot.
Serving: quiet, not flashy, genuinely solid
Seven serve attempts, zero errors, zero aces, 100% in play, and her team won the point 57.1% of the time she served. No aces doesn't mean no value here — a server who never misses and consistently pressures the opponent's first ball is doing real, if less visible, work. This is exactly the kind of number a highlight reel would never surface, but a full stat line does.
Defense: a smaller, supporting role
Two digs, one dig error, a 66.7% success rate. This is a modest defensive workload compared to the team's primary back-row specialists — consistent with an OH whose main job is attacking and who's likely getting some rotational relief on defense, the same way she's protected somewhat on serve-receive.
Reading it as one picture, not four separate ones
Put together, Emily M.'s stat line tells a coherent story: highest attacking volume on the team, deliberately light passing load, a reliable if unspectacular server, and a lighter defensive workload than the team's specialists. None of these facts is surprising on its own — but most coaches never look at all four at once for a single player, which means the pattern — a role clearly built around protecting and maximizing attacking output — usually goes unnoticed even though the stat line has been saying it the whole time.
The actionable version of this: if the coaching staff wants to test whether Emily M.'s efficiency (+.167) improves with a lighter attacking share, the numbers suggest there's real room to shift some volume toward Alina F., without meaningfully increasing Emily M.'s passing or defensive load — the tradeoff would land entirely in the one category already carrying the most weight.
